1864 2 Cent Coin Value
The 1864 two-cent piece has gotten complicated with all the variety types, motto debates, and condition-based pricing flying around. As someone who has collected Civil War era coinage, I learned everything there is to know about this historically significant denomination. Today, I will share it all with you.
Why It Matters

Probably should have led with this section, honestly—the 1864 two-cent piece was the first U.S. coin to carry “In God We Trust.” This motto, added during Civil War religious sentiment, eventually spread to all U.S. coinage.
The Varieties
That’s what makes 1864 two-cent pieces endearing to us collectors—two major varieties exist:
- Large Motto: Common variety, most examples
- Small Motto: Scarce variety, premium prices
The difference is in the letter sizing of “In God We Trust.” Small Motto pieces are significantly rarer.
Value by Grade
- Good (G-4): $20-30 (Large Motto)
- Fine (F-12): $60-80
- Very Fine (VF-20): $100-150
- Extremely Fine (EF-40): $150-200
- Mint State (MS-60+): $400+
Small Motto varieties command 2-3x these prices.
Design and Composition
James B. Longacre’s design features a shield with “In God We Trust” on the obverse, a wreath surrounding “2 CENTS” on the reverse. The coin is bronze (95% copper, 5% tin/zinc).
Buying Tips
Authenticate any Small Motto claim before paying premium prices. PCGS and NGC certification provides peace of mind. Check that details remain clear—heavily worn examples lose significant value.
