Unlocking the Value of the Rare 1909 VDB Penny

The 1909 VDB Penny Value

The 1909 VDB penny has gotten complicated with all the mintmark premiums, grade debates, and authentication concerns flying around. As someone who has studied early Lincoln cents extensively, I learned everything there is to know about this iconic issue. Today, I will share it all with you.

Why It’s Special

Coin collecting
Numismatic treasures for collectors

Probably should have led with this section, honestly—the 1909 VDB was the first Lincoln cent. Victor David Brenner’s initials (VDB) appeared on the reverse but were quickly removed after public criticism. Those early coins with the initials became instant collectibles.

The Key Date

That’s what makes the 1909-S VDB endearing to us Lincoln cent collectors—only 484,000 were minted before the initials were removed. The Philadelphia version (27 million) is affordable; the San Francisco version costs hundreds to thousands.

Value Factors

  • Philadelphia (no mintmark): $15-$100+ depending on grade
  • San Francisco (S): $700-$2,000+ depending on grade
  • Condition critical—MS-65 examples command significant premiums

Authentication

Counterfeits exist for the valuable S-mint version. PCGS or NGC certification provides authentication and grade verification.
